“Discover Europe” is actually a Forum which gives chance to the European embassies and companies to present themselves to the Asian students. That means that about 15 companies from France, Germany, England, etc and nearly 20 embassies were present. Officially the whole event was organised by the European Union but Switzerland was invited too. I received about 2 weeks before the event a mail from the Swiss embassy with the question if I would feel up to answering the several questions from the Asians. Naturally, I said yes. Thus I went there to represent Switzerland as a Student. It was really funny to see what the Asians are interested in and what kind of questions were asked. Surprisingly many questions were about a scholarship in Switzerland. Because the whole event was under special guidance of the European Union, they wanted to present themselves a bit too. So every student got a map from Europe on which they had to stick a sticker they could collect from the different booths. Not so few times, we had to explain that we don’t distribute any stickers as we’re not a member of the European Union or we also had to make clear that the country between Norway and Finland is Sweden not Switzerland. Contrarily, the Swedish had to fight for their stickers to be stuck on Sweden and not on Switzerland.

 “Discover Europe“ ist eigentlich ein Forum, das den europäischen Botschaften und europäischen Firmen die Möglichkeit gibt, sich den asiatischen Studenten zu präsentieren. Das heisst es waren etwa 15 Firmen aus Deutschland, Frankreich, England, usw anwesend und etwa 20 offizielle Landesvertretungen. Eigentlich wurde das ganze von der EU organisiert, aber die Schweiz hatte Gastrecht. Ich erhielt etwa 2 Wochen vor der Verantstaltung eine Mail von der Schweizer Botschaft mit der Anfrage, ob ich nicht Bereit wäre mich zum Schweizer Stand zu begeben und die verschieden Antworten der asiatischen Studenten zu beantworten. Natürlich hatte ich zugesagt. Also ging ich dahin und präsentierte die Schweiz, als Student. War noch witzig zu sehen, für was sich die anderen so Interessieren und was für Fragen gestellt wurden. Erstaunlich viel wurde über Stipendien nachgefragt. Da die ganze Verantstaltung eigentlich von der EU organisiert wurde, wollte sich die auch ein wenig profilieren. So bekamen die Studenten eine Europakarte und mussten bei jedem Land kleine Stickers holen und sie auf das entsprechende Feld des Landes kleben, nur hatten wir keine Sticker, da wir nicht Mitglied von der EU sind, oder mussten ihnen erklären, dass das Land zwischen Norwegen und Finnland nicht die Schweiz ist und im Gegensatz dazu, mussten die Schweden vielmals erklären, dass ihr Kleber nicht auf die Schweiz geklebt werden soll.

« Discover Europe » est principalement un forum, qui donne la possibilité aux ambassades et des entreprises européennes de se présenter aux étudiants asiatiques. Ça veut dire qu’il y avait environ 15 boîtes et à peu près 20 ambassades présentes. Particulièrement, l’événement était organisé par UE mais la Suisse était aussi invitée. J’ai reçu environ 2 semaines avant un courriel avec la demande si j’étais disposé à me rendre au stand de la Suisse pour répondre aux questions des asiatiques. Naturellement j’ai dit oui. Comme ça je suis y allé là bas pour représenter la Suisse comme étudiant. C’était vraiment drôle de voir où se trouvent les intérêts des asiatique et aussi les questions qu’ils ont posé par rapport à la Suisse. Il y avait étonnement beaucoup de questions sur les bourses. Car tout l’événement était organisé par UE, ils ont essayé de se faire connaître encore un peu plus. Comme ça ils ont distribué une carte européenne à chaque étudiant avec laquelle ils devaient passer aux différents stands pour collectionner des autocollants et les coller sur le pays correspondant. Malheureusement on n’en avait aucun car on ne fait pas parti de l’UE ou souvent on devait expliquer que le pays entre la Norvège et le Finlande n’est pas la Suisse et contrairement les suédois juste à côté avaient la peine de faire comprendre que leur autocollant n’est pas destiné pour coller sur la Suisse.

Week 8

English 

In the beginning of the week I had to recover from the Indonesian strains. It was still stressful to be always on our way without much sleep and to pass a lot of our time together with vanny our van.

So I happened to enter class on Monday and a tutor asked if everybody was aware of the quiz of today, obviously I wasn’t. As I looked into the faces of the others, however, I was surely not the only one. In any case it wasn’t so horrible because it was just an intermediate test.

On Wednesday my first visitors finally arrived. My Brother and his wife were staying for the next three days in Singapore. I booked them a cosy Hotel close to little India. The room, however, was very crap: without a window and only 10m² included the toilet. We visited town and school, ate Asian and Swiss food and we sweated together.

The visit made me really happy particularly because I’ve been here for almost 2.5 month now. Nevertheless I brought back to my mind that it’ll still last a “long” time until I’m going to see my lovelies back home. This also is going to pass.

Am Anfang der Woche musste ich mich noch ein wenig von den Indonesien Strapazen erholen. War es doch ein gewisser Stress ständig auf Achse zu sein, wenig zu schlafen und viel Zeit mit Vanny, unserem Van, zu verbringen. So kam es, dass ich am Montag in eine Stunde kam und der Lehrer fragte ob alle vom Test von jenem Morgen wussten. Ich natürlich nicht, aber als ich in die Gesichter der andern schaute, war ich nicht der einzige. War aber auch nicht so schlimm, da es sich nur um ein Zwischentest handelt.Am Mittwoch war dann mein erster Besuch eingetroffen. Mein Bruder Stefan besuchte mich zusammen mit seiner Frau Heidi für die nächsten 3 Tage. Wir besuchten die Stadt, die Schule, gingen Asiatisch und Schweizerisch essen und schwitzen zusammen. Ich hatte für sie ein gemütliches Hotel ausgesucht in der Nähe von Little India. Sie bekamen dann aber nur ein Zimmer das kein Fenster hatte und vielleicht 10 m² inkl WC hatte. J.Der Besuch hatte mich sehr gefreut bin ich jetzt nun doch schon fast 2,5 Monate weg von zu Hause. Aber es hat mir wieder einmal mehr klar gemacht, dass es noch „lange“ gehen wird, bis ich meine Lieben zu Hause wieder sehen werde. Aber auch das wird vorbei gehen.

Le début de la semaine était déstiné pour me reposer après les fatigues de notre voyage in Indonésie. C’était quand même usant d’être toujours en route, de dormir souvent seulement un peu et de passer beaucoup de temps avec Vanny, notre van.Comme ça, ça arrivait que je sois venu au cours et un moniteur est entré dans la salle et nous a demandé si tout le monde a conscience de notre test de ce jour là. Évidemment je ne sais rien du tout. Mais en regardant les visages des autres je me suis rendu compte que je n’étais pas le seule non plus. Vu que c’était juste un test intermédiaire, il n’y a pas de conséquence.Mercredi il y avait finalement mes premiers visiteurs qui sont arrivés. Mon frère et sa femme sont venus me rendre visite pour les prochains 3 jours. J’avais organisé un hôtel sympa depuis dehors. Eux, ils ont reçu une chambre sans fenêtre et seulement 10m², salle de bain inclus. On a visité la ville et l’école, mangé de la bouffe locale et la bouffe suisse et on a bien transpiré ensemble.Cette visite ma fait tellement plaisir car ça fait déjà 2.5 mois que je suis parti de la suisse et je vie ici. Cépendant ça ma aussi rendu compte que ça va durer encore «longtemps» jusque je vais voir mes chers en suisse. Mais je suis sure que ça va vite passer

 

Quiz and Presentation on Week 7

Last Tuesday and Wednesday I hat my first quizzes and also my first presentation in class. I was quite curious about because I didn’t know what to expect. Moreover the preparation wasn’t the best for the 2 tests but anyway these were just midterm test that count few or nothing and on the other hand I’m here to enjoy my time. The first test, however, went quite ok not to difficult because we had already treated all the matter which was covered in the quiz. The second one on Wednesday was a Multiple Choice… not that difficult but easy to slip up. We’ll see what the marks will be, hope not too bad. During the 2 tests there astonishingly much noise in the room. There was never really silence in the lecture theatre: they talked even more than at EPFL during the test and to blow one’s nose, they don’t know either. At the presentation which was about solid waste minimisation I shocked my lecturer and my school mates with the statement that Singapore is about 10 years behind Switzerland as far as Solid Waste management is concerned.

Am Dienstag und Mittwoch hatte ich meine ersten Zwischenpruefungen und die erste Praesentation. Ich war sehr gespannt auf die Pruefungen da ich voll nicht wusste was ich zu erwarten hatte. Und ausserdem war die Vorbereitung ehrlich gesagt auch nicht die Beste, aber es sind ja wie gesagt nur Zwischenpruefungen die wenig bis gar nichts zaehlen und anderer Seits bin ich ja auch hier um die Zeit zu geniessen. Wie auch immer die erste ging recht gut, vor allem weil es ein Thema war, das wir an der EPFL schon behandelt hatten. Die 2te vom Mittwoch morgen war eine Multiple Choice… nicht sehr schwierig, aber einfach fehler zu machen. Mal sehen was aus den beiden geworden ist.  Bei beiden Pruefungen war erstaunlich fiel Unruhe im Saal und es war selten wirklich ruhig: es wurde fast noch mehr gesprochen als an der EPFL waehrend den Pruefungen und Nase putzen kennen sie hier auch nicht. Bei der Praesentation, bei der es um Abfall ging, schockte ich den Lehrer und meine Mitschueler mit der Aussage, dass Singapur etwa noch 10 Jahre hinter der Schweiz steht in Sachen Abfallmanagement.

Le mardi et mercredi j’avais mes premiers test intermédiares et présentation. J’étais très nerveux pour les examens car je ne savais pas du tout qu’est-ce que je devais attendre de ça. De plus, honnêtement, les préparations n’étaient pas les meilleurs non plus. Tant pis, ça étaient que des midterm-test qui compte pas beaucoup ou même rien et de l’autre part je suis aussi ici pour passer un bon temps. Quoi qu’il soit, le premier allait pas mal, vu que c’était un sujet qu’on avait déjà traité un peu à l’EPFL. Le deuxième le mercredi était un test à choix multiple qui n’était pas trop dur mais facile à faire des erreurs. On va voir qu’est-ce que ça donnait. Pendant les deux tests c’était étonnement bruyant et il n’y avait presque jamais du silence. Il y avait encore plus de conversation que à l’EPFL et de se moucher est aussi inconnu. Pendant la présentation qui traité la gestion des déchets j’ai choquer le prof et les autres étudiant avec la déclaration que Singapour est encore environ 10 ans derrière la suisse concernant les déchets.
